Ikebana Workshop at Sophiensæle

This was the biggest workshop I have ever done. I ended up leading two workshops for more than 20 people 🫣

It was part of the international festival Never Work, and I’m very grateful to Steff and Jeanne at Sophiensæle for discovering my workshop and inviting me to take part.

My dear friend Lydia, whom I’ve known throughout my entire time in Berlin, helped me tremendously. While I was picking up flowers from Kiezblume, she magically transformed the Hochzeitssaal (the wedding hall) into a workshop space.

The building was constructed in 1904/05 as a place for the professional training of craftspeople. It felt very special to practice Ikebana there. What a wonderful opportunity to introduce a traditional Japanese art form in such a historic setting. It also made me think about how Ikebana continues to transform and find its place beyond Japan.

For this special workshop, ceramic artist Verena de Hoog created a series of beautiful vessels. I asked my sister to send me a large number of kenzan from Japan, and my neighbors kindly received the very heavy box when it arrived.

Meanwhile, I was also relearning Ikebana myself. My constant companion was The Book of Tea by Kakuzō Okakura, whose experience of living between Japan and the West resonates with my own background. I touched only briefly, unfortunately, on Taoism, Shinto, Zen Buddhism and Confucianism while preparing the presentation and trying to understand how these ideas shaped the spirit of Ikebana.

I know I’m not ready to settle just yet. There is still so much more to learn, question and explore.
